On the night of her high school graduation, Harmonie "Knee" Paulson's abusive father beats her mother. Knee steps in and the fight escalates. After smashing a bottle over her father's head Knee runs away against her delusional mother's will. That night Knee runs into characters that are familiar to her from the books she has read. Knee runs to a library and a mysterious librarian helps her escape her tortured world...for good.
