During World War I, Jo�o Rat�o is a Portuguese soldier fighting in Flandres, France. He dreams of Vit�ria, a young lady with whom he corresponds by way of emotional love letters... that a comrade writes for him. Jo�o Rat�o is analphabet. Back home, it's time to come in the open, and courage fails Jo�o Rat�o. More learned men are after Vit�ria, and jealousy starts burning Jo�o Rat�o, like the rat of the popular tale... Will victory be his?
